The hostel's rooms

Ostello Marello offers twin rooms with two single beds, designed for two people travelling together who want a simple, well-located base. Every room sleeps up to two guests and shares the same pared-back, tidy style: understated furnishings, a desk, heating and a fan, with a power socket beside the bed.

The main difference between the room types comes down to the bathroom: some rooms have a private ensuite with a shower and bidet, while others, at a lower rate, share the facilities with a shower. There is also a more spacious version of the twin for those who'd like a little extra room. In every case these are neat, functional spaces geared towards a good night's rest after a day out among the streets of the centre.

Is this the right hostel for you?

Yes, if...

  • You want to get around by metro: Cavour station on Line B is about 50 metres from the property.
  • You're here for ancient Rome: the Colosseum, the Forums and the Domus Aurea are a short walk away.
  • You're after a budget, no-frills stay in the historic centre with an excellent location.
  • You love authentic neighbourhoods: Monti is full of shops, bars and small restaurants right nearby.
  • You'd prefer an ensuite room: some room types come with a private bathroom with shower and bidet.

Maybe not, if...

  • You want to pay by card on site: here payment is accepted in cash only.
  • You need a lift: the property doesn't have one and spreads across several floors.
  • You're travelling with a pet: animals are not allowed at the property.
  • You're arriving by car: there's no parking and the rione is largely pedestrian, ill-suited to driving.

Amenities and facilities

Ostello Marello keeps things simple and does the essentials well: a budget, tidy base from which to explore Rome on foot. WiFi is free in the shared areas, and there's a common room with a TV area where you can unwind or swap tips with other guests after a day out in the city.

The rooms come with heating, a fan, a desk and a power socket beside the bed; some have a private ensuite with shower and bidet, while the others share facilities with a shower, towels, toilet paper and a WC. Security is covered by fire extinguishers and CCTV in the outdoor and common areas. Worth noting: there is no lift and no parking, and payment on site is cash only. All in all, a practical place for those who value substance and location over higher-end comforts.

Location and what to see

Ostello Marello sits on Via Urbana, in the Monti district, Rome's first rione and one of the most characterful parts of the historic centre. It's a lively, largely pedestrian area of steep lanes, artisan workshops, vintage shops and small bars: from Piazza della Madonna dei Monti to Via del Boschetto, the neighbourhood is easy to explore on foot. Location is the property's strong suit, rated 9.5 by guests.

Connections are excellent: Cavour metro station (Line B) is about 50 metres away and reaches the Colosseum in minutes or, in the other direction, Termini station, the city's main rail hub, just under a kilometre away on foot. From there run trains and links to Ciampino airport (around 12 km) and Fiumicino.

The monumental heart of ancient Rome is within walking distance: the Colosseum and the Domus Aurea are a few hundred metres away, while the Imperial Forums, the Palatine Hill and Piazza Venezia are a fifteen- to twenty-minute stroll. The Domus Aurea, on the Oppian Hill, can be visited by guided tour on weekends with advance booking. For the rest of the city it's best to walk or take the metro; in the evenings the rione stays busy thanks to its restaurants and wine bars. Spring and autumn are the best seasons to visit Rome, with mild weather and bright days.
